CHED confers universityhood to ZPPSU, Dr. Cabral sworn in as First UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

 Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University (ZPPSU) was formally conferred its universityhood by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) during the ceremony of the Gawad Parangal for Region IX held at the ZPPSU Gymnasium on July 28, 2021. The award was received by Dr. Nelson P. Cabral, ZPPSU President and Dr. Celso L. Lobregat, father of ZPPSU and principal author.

 The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recognized the local colleges and universities in Region IX after compliance with the standards set by the commission and for their significant achievements. CHED also bestowed the “Gawad Parangal” award to the College of Medicine-Western Mindanao State University, Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Government College and Colegio de la Ciudad de Zamboanga.

 The award comes with the institutional recognition where the recipients are issued a certificate of eligibility to receive funds from CHED as provided by the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act (RA10931). The recipients are awarded trophies for their significant achievement in the region as well as the Certificates of Eligibility that qualifies the recipients for the Free Higher Education program.

 Dr. Nelson P. Cabral was sworn in as the first university president of ZPPSU by no less than the CHED Chairperson Hon. J. Prospero E. De Vera III, during the Gawad Parangal after ZPPSU was conferred its universityhood and witnessed by CHED and local government officials, ZPPSU officials and community. The momentous event was a recognition and testament of Dr. Cabral’s commitment and dedication in the pursuit of quality education in Zamboanga Peninsula region.

 In attendance during the Gawad Parangal include Atty. Ryan L. Estevez-OIC Executive Director UniFAST, Dr. Rody P. Garcia-OIC Regional Director CHED ROIX, Hon. Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar-City Mayor of Zamboanga City, Dr. Maria Carla A. Ochotorena-WMSU President, Former Congressman Dr. Celso Lobregat, representatives from the local government of Zamboanga del Sur, members of the ZPPSU Board of Regents, and other invited guests. The Gawad Parangal limited the attendance to minimum number of personalities due to the existing COVID-19 restrictions implemented by the local government.

 The visit by the national officials also led the unveiling by the CHED Chairperson De Vera together with ZPPSU President Dr. Cabral, of the official ZPPSU logo that depicts the transformation, conversion, and mandate of the institution from a state college into a state university pursuant to RA 11187, also known as “An Act Converting the Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College into a State University to be known as the Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University, and Appropriating Funds Therefor”.

 As part of CHED Central Office visit to Zamboanga City, the CHED Chairperson De Vera together with ZPPSU President Dr. Cabral have undertaken the ocular inspection and visit to the several colleges of the university as ZPPSU proudly made all the necessary preparations for the limited face-to-face classes and satisfactorily complied with the requirements of the relevant government agency with the subsequent issuance of the “Safety Seal” by the city government of Zamboanga.  CHED recognized the efforts of the ZPPSU and underscored its commitment to compliance of health safety protocols and welfare in ensuring safe opening of the university for the limited face-to-face classes.

 Also, CHED Chairperson De Vera visited several the graduates of ZPPSU in Zamboanga City who were recipient of scholarship grants awarded by the government as success stories to inspire other students to pursue their dream to finish their education and earn a college degree.
